DISABILITY TIME FRAMES: HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE?
Every disability case is different, even though all have some common elements. I am attempting here to answer the common question, "How long will it take to get disability benefits?" I practice in Alabama, so my answers concern Social Security applications in Alabama--but I doubt it is much different anywhere in the country. The waiting times are approximately the same.
THE INITIAL DECISION. From the time you file your initial application, it will usually take between 90 and 120 days to get a decision. The decision will be quicker if the claimant has a terminal illness or meets criteria for one of the "compassionate allowance" diseases. A veteran with a 100% permanent disability from the VA may also get a faster decision.
THE APPEAL. The appeal involves attending a hearing before an administrative law judge. The average wait time to get a hearing in Alabama is now just over 15 months. Individuals described in the above paragraph might get a quicker hearing but the wait is typically over 1 year from the date of the appeal filing.
GETTING PAID. After you attend the hearing, it will take an additional 30 to 90 days to get a formal decision from the judge. Once the decision has been issued, it can take an additional 30 to 90 days to receive a check.
Sadly, this entire Social Security disability process is maddeningly slow. As you can see, it may easily take up to 2 years or longer to get a check. In the best case scenario (you get approved with no appeal necessary), it can still take 6 to 9 months to get a check.
This is why I encourage everyone to try to plan against the possibility of a sudden disability and the loss of all income. There are virtually no sources of financial assistance. Most people don't think about disability until it happens, then it is too late. Here are some suggestions I wish everyone would take seriously, regardless of age:

- Check to see if your employer has a short term or long term disability insurance plan. What is the waiting period? How much benefit does it offer? How long will these benefits be paid? An employer sponsored plan can be a financial life saver while you wait on Social Security.
- If your employer has no coverage, then consider getting a private disability insurance plan--at least enough to cover your mortgage/rent, utilities and basic living necessities. Get someone knowledgeable about these matters to check out the plan before you purchase. Not all plans are created equal. Some are virtually worthless, while others can be quite valuable.
