WHY NO COST OF LIVING ADJUSTMENT FOR 2016?

The Social Security Act requires that Cost of Living Adjustments (COLAs) be tied to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers. This data is compiled monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Each December, Social Security will compare the index to December of the previous year to determine whether there will be a COLA adjustment.

In December, 2015 it was determined that no COLA was called for according to the formula specified in the law.  Therefore, benefits for 2016 will continue at the same level as for 2015.
