SOCIAL SECURITY ADVOCATES - WHAT WE DO

The following is taken from NOSSCR, the National Organization of Social Security Claimants Representatives.  It explains as clearly as possible what Social Security disability advocates (representatives) do on behalf of the disabled.

Established in 1979, the National Organization of Social Security Claimant's Representatives (NOSSCR) is a professional association of over 4,000 attorneys and other advocates who help individuals with disabilities obtain Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits.   To be eligible for disability benefits, individuals must be unable to engage in "substantial gainful activity" because of a medically determinable physical or mental impairment which can be expected to result in death or has lasted for at least 12 months. NOSSCR members represent these individuals with disabilities in legal proceedings before the Social Security Administration and in federal court.
NOSSCR members are committed to providing high-quality representation for individuals with disabilities, to maintaining a system of full and fair review for every claimant and beneficiary and to advocating for improvements in the disability determination and adjudication process.
The Social Security and Supplemental Security Income disability programs are complex. Claimant's representatives play an important role by assisting claimants to navigate a daunting and often confusing process. With an increasing number of individuals with disabilities seeking benefits, NOSSCR members also help make the process more efficient for both claimants and the Social Security Administration.
